KAKISA LAKE, NT, — The 19th annual Assembly of the Dehcho First Nations (DFN) will have a number of critical decisions before its members when it meets June 23-29:
The annual event, open to the public, returns to its historic site of Kakisa Lake First Nations (Ka’a’gee Tu First Nation) after holding last year’s meeting of about 100 chiefs, elders and delegates at Fort Simpson.
The annual meeting is the highest decision-making body of the DFN. Key agenda items:
- Amendments to bylaws;
- Election committee report for selection of Grand Chief;
- Opening address by interim Grand Chief Gerald Antoine;
- Progress of the Dehcho Process Negotiations and community information;
- Reports on Nahanni Park Expansion; Revised Dehcho Land Use Plan (DLUP); and Edehzie.
Note
Media are welcome to attend. All meetings are open unless the Assembly votes to hold “in camera” sessions on specific issues.
Kakisa Lake is located about 13 km off the Mackenzie Highway on the eastern shore of Kakisa Lake. The turnoff is roughly midway between Jeanne Marie River and Enterprise and will be signed.
This is a camping assembly held in the outdoors. Media should bring adequate camping gear. Food will be supplied on site.
Facilities and electronic equipment for wireless, satellite phone will be available on a limited basis. However, media with special needs should bring their own equipment for transmission.
Media registration will begin Monday, June 23, 2008 late afternoon.
Cultural and spiritual ceremonies will be held. Media sensitivity is requested.
