The DFN launched a court challenge in November, 2010 after the Harper government suddenly decided to terminate the protection of Edehzhie and open this nationally significant, pristine area to mining. After years of working in partnership with the DFN to protect the ecologically sensitive Edehzhie as a National Wildlife Area, Canada effectively tried to unilaterally terminate the Protected Areas Strategy by allowing legal protection of the area to expire on October 31, 2010.
